12/5 Powell to steal lightning Bolt’s thunder

Usain Bolt is the 11/8 market leader to win the men’s 100m as the athletics gets underway in Beijing, but I prefer the chances of former world record holder Asafa Powell at 12/5, who can usurp his fellow countryman.

In the 200m, Bolt is 1/10 and is clearly the man to beat, but I am hearing very positive vibes about the chances of American Walter Dix and he could prove to be a real value bet at 12/1.

Sanya Richards is top priced at 1/3 in the women’s 400m, but the value here surely is Christine Ohurugo who is current world champion and available at 14/1.

Jeremy Wariner will be hard to beat in the men’s 400m, while Allyson Felix looks a terrific bet to win the women’s 200m at 7/4.

In the longer distance events, the men’s 1500m looks very open, with Bernard Legat overpriced at 7/1, while those who fancy Paula Radcliffe for women’s marathon can get 6/1.

Lucky Leigh will be hard to beat in the 2.20 at Newbury this afternoon. Mick Channon has always held this filly in high regard and this afternoon she has a great chance to win in listed company.

Blue Monday takes a drop in class in the 7.35 at Newmarket and will be hard to beat, while Snowdrop Princess looks an improving type who can land a hat-trick in the 3.45 at Nottingham.

In this weekend’s football action, Spurs should be backed at 11/8 to win at Middlesbrough, while Leicester City look too big at 13/10 to win at Stockport.

Hamilton caused a big shock in the SPL on Monday beating Dundee United and are value at 10/3 to win again at Inverness.
