Dubai is planning to create the world's first ever 3D-printed office, in the hope that it will pave the way for cheaper construction in the future.

The single storey building, which will be located in the city's centre, is a joint project between the Gulf state and a number of companies, including WinSun, a Chinese firm specialising in making houses using 3D printers. Gensler, Thornton Thomasetti, and Syska Hennessy are also playing a role.

It will be printed layer-upon-layer using a printer 20 feet in height. The resulting structure have around 2,000 square feet of floor space.

It's not just the outside that will be created using this technique – interior furniture and structural components will also be built through 3D printing with reinforced concrete, gypsum reinforced with glass fibre and plastic.

Mohamed Al Gergawi, the United Arab Emirates minister of cabinet affairs, said in a statement:

We are keen to use the latest technologies to simplify people’s lives and to serve them better. This project is part of our overall innovation strategy to create new designs and new solutions in education, healthcare and cities.

Our goal is to increase the happiness and wellbeing of our residents and to pioneer new solutions for the world.
