The Lib Dems spent nearly £8,000 for Nick Clegg to mime a Carly Rae Jepsen song in the build up to last year’s election

In the build up to the general election, former Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg spent almost £8,000 to imitate a music video in a desperate bid to “go viral”.

The video, first revealed by The Times, saw Clegg imitate the role of Tom Hanks in a Carly Rae Jepsen music video.

In the original video, Hanks walks the streets of Manhattan, high-fiving passers-by.

The Lib Dems’ version took place in Gravesend.

According to The Times, the project was hastily scrapped after Clegg has second thoughts on the wisdom of the project, which contained little or no messaging on Lib Dem policies just months before a general election.

While copies are still known to exist, a Lib Dem spokesman confirmed today that there are no plans to release the video.

Filings in the the electoral expenses register, the party spent £7,800 on the parody video, which was put together by Create Productions of North London.
