Property of the Week: The Old Vicarage in Fulham features a baptismal font as a sink in the downstairs bathroom

If you’re looking for a sacred space to return to after a hard day at work, this quiet – yet large – family home in Fulham is a rare find. The gothic-style detached mansion was built in 1864 as a vicarage, but now it’s a one-of-a-kind home.

Old St James Vicarage, Fulham, £10,500 a week

Located on Maxwell Road, on the well-regarded Moore Park Estate between the King’s Road and Fulham Road, it’s bursting with original features thanks to the current owners, who have done an “amazing” restoration job, according to Sarah McIntyre, who is director of lettings at Harrods Estates, the agency tasked with finding a tenant.

“The property strikes the perfect balance between a historic vicarage with gothic revival architecture and a modern, comfortable family home. It is clear how much effort went into every detail of its construction and it is deservedly one of the most spectacular and unique properties I have ever viewed.”

Architectural highlights include the thick oak front door with an etched cross on it, the brick wall in front of the house with a door inside a gable, and the entrance hall, which is bedecked in bespoke light green plasterwork and white marble flooring, and travels right to the back of the house via a series of arches.

A magnificent, working Gothic fireplace lights up the double drawing room and the ground floor bathroom has a baptismal font in place of a sink.

Comprising 7,932sqft including the garage and the garden, the house packs in six bedrooms and bathrooms, a large family room split into a kitchen/lounge/diner, a formal dining room, two living rooms, a TV room, a study, utility room, three guest cloakrooms and a garage for three cars with a separate studio apartment above for live-in relatives or staff. A walled garden also provides private outdoor space and a courtyard.

Fulham Broadway station is a five minute walk away, with all the shops and restaurants of Chelsea close by.
