Huawei chair calls for speedy resolution of case against its detained executive

The chairman of Chinese tech company Huawei said the company will call for a speedy resolution of the case of its detained chief financial officer who is being held in Canada accused of breaking US sanctions on Iran.

Liang Hua, who has been appointed as acting chief financial officer, was speaking to media on the sidelines of the Davos economic forum in Switzerland.

Former chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou was arrested in Canada on 1 December over alleged violations of US sanctions.

Meng, who is also the daughter of Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei, was released on bail last month and is due in court on 6 February.

She faces extradition to the US to respond to allegations of sanctions-busting.

The case has soured diplomatic relations between the US and China, with fears that Meng's arrest could reignite trade tensions between the two economic superpowers.

Relations between Ottawa and Beijing have also been hit with China arresting two Canadian citizens, Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, late last year, and also sentencing Canadian citizen Robert Lloyd Schellenberg to death on drug trafficking charges in recent days, after he was previously given a custodial sentence.
