Baffling Blatter’s ‘Slave’ remarks are a joke

By: Trevor Steven

So, according to Sepp Blatter, the president of world governing body Fifa, our modern day topflight footballers are being treated like “slaves”.

With comments like that, it’s no wonder Blatter is seen as an irritation to our game rather than a so-called leader.

I don’t think the man has had a sensible thing to say in years and is actually doing the game a disservice with opinions like that. What I can’t understand is why he would make a statement like that. Where do his loyalties lie, where’s his rationale?

Lack of Respect

Cristiano Ronaldo is a player just one year into a lucrative contract extension, which he signed willingly.

Now he has a better offer and wants to move on, it’s treating that contract and the club with a lack of respect. This player power seems to be getting worse by the year and it’s leaving the transfer system in chaos. But unfortunately, with the stance that Fifa have taken on this – ie none – I really can’t see where it will end.

It is also a situation which does not work the other way. If a player signs a big contract then loses his form and is left out the team, the club still have to pay him the same. It’s gone too far and someone needs to make a stand to get the system back into line. Another good example of player power, albeit in a different way, is Ronaldinho, who is finally set to sign for AC Milan.

False Hope

He clearly never wanted to go to Manchester City in a million years, but people who are not living in the real world continued to pursue him and, as a result, supporters were given false hope.

When a player looking to resurrect his career has a choice between City and Milan, there really is no deliberation. City’s interest merely gave Ronaldinho bargaining power. It also looked like is a clear attempt to get the club out into the European market and get it known, but instead it has made City look foolish.
