BMW to stop customisation following EV transition costs

BMW is said to stop car customisation following the transition to electric vehicles (EV) that is forcing the automotive giant to cut costs where possible.

Once priding itself for the wide range of choices given to customers, BMW has now said it will not be able to provide such a large number of options when producing electric cars, the Financial Times reported.

“We will especially reduce the number of available combinations, because certain combinations make no sense at all, and are never chosen,” the group’s chief financial officer Nicolas Peter said today in Frankfurt.

“There’s a potential to go from offering 10 different [rims], which we might have done earlier, to five, without losing a single unit [sale],” Peter added.

To lure in customers – especially those looking to buy a Mini – the Munich-based car maker used to offer design customisations, as well as engine variants and in-car features, reaching up to 15 trillion combinations.
