Boeing's commercial airplanes unit announced today it would cut even more jobs in 2017 due to continued competition in the industry.

The aircraft maker cut about eight per cent of jobs since the beginning of this year, including a 10 per cent reduction of executive positions.

In an internal memo, Boeing said it would offer a voluntary layoff programme in early 2017, but said involuntary layoffs may occur in some cases, Reuters reported.

Boeing, which will release its fourth-quarter results on 25 January, said it looks to reduce non-labour costs next year.

Last week, the company announced it would reduce the production of its twin-aisle 777 jetliner by 40 per cent in August 2017 due to weak demand for the aircraft. Boeing will increase spending on producing new models.

A spokesman told Reuters employees participating in the voluntary layoff program will receive a lump sum payment of one week's pay for each year served, for a maximum of 26 weeks.
