Profits at Boeing soared by a huge 52 per cent in its second quarter, as the American aerospace and defence giant gained from higher commercial aircraft deliveries.

Net earnings rose to more than $1.65bn (£969m) in the second quarter, up from nearly $1.09bn for the same period last year.

Revenue growth was less strong however, up by one per cent to $22.05bn.

Jim McNerney, Boeing chief executive, said: “With 783 new commercial airplane orders to date this year and significant contracts in the quarter for military aircraft and satellites, our backlog remains large and diverse.”

Meanwhile Delta Airlines second quarter profits rose by 17 per cent, with net income up to $801m from $685m for the same period last year, boosted by strong passenger revenue growth in the US and Latin America, and reduced fuel costs.
