British Airways cancels more flights as strikes bite

By: August Graham

International Airlines Group (IAG) today said a redundancy consultation at British Airways could lead to 12,000 people losing their jobs.

British Airways said today it is cancelling several flights at the end of this month as pilots prepare to go out on strike.

The airline did not say how many flights would be affected, but promised to let customers know.

“We are now contacting all those affected to offer them a full refund or a rebooking on an alternative date, destination or airline,” the airline said.

Earlier this week the company was forced to cancel 1,700 flights to and from Heathrow and Gatwick as its pilots walked out over pay. They are scheduled to strike again on 27 September.

Pilots union Balpa said British Airways was being “irresponsible and inconsiderate” to its customers by pulling the flights for the end of the month. It accused the airline of wanting to “just save money on compensation”.

The union added: “Passengers who will be affected by these cancellations should know that we have given BA multiple opportunities to work with us so we could call off this action.”

On Wednesday BA warned that its flight schedule will take a while to get back to normal after the strikes meant its planes were in the wrong places.
