The BT Pension Scheme today appointed the founder of Now Pensions Morten Nilsson as its new chief executive.

BT Pension Scheme Management (BTPS) said Nilsson will take up the role immediately and report to the firm's chairman of the board of trustees, Paul Spencer.

The telecoms giant's pension is one of the largest defined benefit (DB) schemes in the UK. Nilsson will lead all decisions around asset and liability management, operations and other member service for the scheme, which boasts around £50bn assets.

Nilsson first joined the pensions and investment industry in 2001, and spent more than 10 years working for £90bn Danish pension scheme ATP, in a number of roles.

He founded Now Pensions in 2010, building it into one of the largest occupational defined contribution providers in the UK market.

BTPS chair Spencer said:

The trustee is delighted to welcome Morten to the team and we look forward to working with him to further strengthen the activities of the Trustee of the BT Pension Scheme, and support our 300,000 members

Morten Nilsson said it was a "privilege" to join the pension scheme.

"It is an ambitious and dynamic organisation with a history of successfully using the scale of the fund to find new innovative and forward-looking ways to protect its members’ interests," he added.
