Carillion has won a £90m contract to design and build a new communications centre in Cyprus.

The UK Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) awarded Carillion the contract to build a 10,000 square metre building with temperature and humidity controlled environments.

Construction will begin next month, and the project is due to be completed by the end of January 2019.

The support services company's chief executive Richard Howson said: "We are delighted to have been selected by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation to design and build this project and we look forward to building on the strong relationship we have with the DIO as we work closely together to deliver this important new facility."

The group, which maintains British railways, roads and military bases, revealed earlier this month its profit for 2016 fell by five per cent to £146.7m but was in line with expectations due to delays in government spending since the Brexit vote as well as slower business in the Middle East due to low oil prices.
