Is China blocking Gmail? Chinese Google users reportedly cut off

By: Billy Ehrenberg

The Great Firewall could be blocking Gmail.

China is famed for its internet censorship; it limits or prevents access to a range of websites and services, including Facebook and Twitter. Now it seems the new superpower is blocking Google's email service too.

On Friday, thousands of Gmail addresses were cut off, according to reports from Chinese group GreatFire.org, which fights for freedom of speech.

A member of the group told the Guardian it could even be an attempt by the Chinese government to pressure Google:

I think the government is just trying to further eliminate Google’s presence in China and even weaken its market overseas. Imagine if Gmail users might not get through to Chinese clients. Many people outside China might be forced to switch away from Gmail.

The Guardian also contacted the Chinese government. A spokesperson, Hua Chunying, said that the Chinese government knew nothing of a block.

China has consistently had a welcoming and supportive attitude towards foreign investors doing legitimate business here.

We will, as always, provide an open, transparent and good environment for foreign companies in China.
