City manager-turned-author Mark Speed trolls Peter Capaldi at Dr Who premiere

Dr Who is back on our screens this weekend, but one City worker has more interest than most. By day, Mark Speed works as a manager with financial forecasting company Evaluate, by night he writes novels, most recently about Dr Who.

When Peter Capaldi appeared at the premiere of series eight of the heritage TV show, Speed made sure he was there with his placard, photo bombing Capaldi.

“I wanted to grab writer Steven Moffat but they’d probably lock me up for that,” he told The Capitalist. We’d have to agree with that one.

A parody of Dr Who, Speed’s book poses the question, “What if the BBC had the wrong story?” and gives a very different view of the Dr. But how do Speed’s bosses at Evaluate feel about his shenanigans? “They’re very tolerant,” he says. “I often take a month off to go to do comedy shows etc, they just think ‘there goes Mad Mark.’” Indeed.
