Could coffee-infused wine be the ideal post-Covid date fuel?

If you were asked in a pub quiz what the UK’s favourite supermarket wine is, you might guess Hardy’s, Blossom Hill, Yellowtail, Barefoot or Casillero del Diablo.

You probably wouldn’t think of an Australian red that commemorates people who committed serious crimes such as impersonating an Egyptian, stealing a shroud from a grave, counterfeiting copper coins, or stealing a fish from a pond.

But it’s a funny old world, and according to subscription service The Wine List, 19 Crimes is the country’s most popular plonk, and its success looks set to continue with the release of The Deported, a bottle launched to celebrate the end of social distancing and mandatory mask wearing, and assist in the return of face-to-face dating.

On that note, the brand’s research shows that, when asking  someone out for a drink or suggesting meeting for a coffee a quarter of single people in the UK said they’d rather be asked out for an alcoholic drink, while almost a third preferred a potential love match to start with a coffee. Nobody seemingly goes ‘back to their place’ for tea. A quarter liked to share a bottle of wine on a date and 17 per cent said they find it attractive if their date knows a lot about wine.

If asked to choose between their favourite coffee or their favourite wine, one-fifth couldn’t make up their mind. To satisfy everyone, The Deported is the UK’s first coffee-infused wine. It is made from 97 per cent Australia red with three per cent Colombian Arabica Coffee, brewed and chilled.

It hopes to forge relationships in post-lockdown Britain and transport people to a new world in a slightly less disruptive manner than those poor souls after which the wine itself is named after.
