D’Aloisio brings Summly-based Yahoo app to UK

NICK D’Aloisio, the 18-year-old who sold his Summly app to Yahoo last year for $30m (£18m), yesterday launched Yahoo News Digest for the UK.

News Digest, described by D’Aloisio as providing a “definitive summary of all the need-to-know news”, is designed to curate and summarise the top news stories of the day from multiple sources in one place.

“These days, catching up with the day’s news can be overwhelming – especially on mobile devices where you’re trying to find information quickly and are on the move,” said D’Aloisio.

The app, which has been available in the US for six weeks, is algorithmically produced from multiple sources, editorially curated and then summarised with pieces of information.

“Our digests provide a definitive summary of all the need-to-know news so you can stay on top of what’s happening. To help you get informed quickly, our stories are generated from multiple sources and are assembled from essential ‘bits and pieces’ of information which we call atoms,” added D’Aloisio.

Last week D’Aloisio, just one year since selling his own startup to Yahoo, announced that he has made his first angel investment in a Swedish startup called Tictail.

Tictail aids retailers in designing their own websites free of charge. It was launched May 2012.
