Disney+ snaps up Gary Neville’s The Overlap and new Wayne Rooney hosted show
Gary Neville’s The Overlap media empire has struck a deal to stream his Stick To Football and a new show co-hosted by Wayne Rooney and Mark Goldbridge on Disney+.
The agreement will see Disney+ carry 40 episodes of Stick To Football – the popular football discussion hosted by Neville alongside fellow ex-pros Jamie Carragher, Jill Scott, Ian Wright and Roy Keane – this season.
The streaming giant will also house a new show, Stick To United with Wayne Rooney, co-presented by leading Manchester United YouTuber Goldbridge.
Both shows will continue to be available on YouTube, but the distribution deal gives Neville’s business a route to a wider audience and a means to navigate the proposed social media ban for under-18s.
It follows fellow former footballer turned media mogul Gary Lineker’s deal with Netflix to carry weekly episodes of his The Rest Is Football show for the next two seasons following a successful run at this summer’s World Cup.
Rooney cements Disney+ connection
“We’re immensely proud to be partnering with Disney+,” said Neville. “It’s one of the world’s most iconic entertainment brands, and for us this is a unique partnership that feels right for everyone involved.
“What’s exciting is that we’re not changing who we are. Our community will continue to enjoy our content in exactly the way they always have through YouTube, while at the same time Disney+’s incredible global streaming audience will now be able to discover and enjoy it too.
“It’s a partnership that expands our reach without compromising our identity.”
Neville’s The Overlap was majority acquired by LBC owner Global in January and bought Goldbridge’s The United Stand and That’s Football shows in April.
Former police officer Goldbridge – real name Brent Di Cesare – has amassed 4.5m subscribers to become one of the most prominent football content creators.
Rooney is also set to star in a behind the scenes docuseries on Disney+, The Real Rooneys, about his family life with wife Coleen and their four sons.
“Having worked with Gary, Roy, Jamie, Wrighty and Jill on both ‘Stick to Football’ and ‘The Overlap’s Fan Debate’ show it was a natural next step to co-host a new show from The Overlap that is totally dedicated to everything Manchester United,” said Rooney.
