Drax wins £238m EU funding to build its carbon storage project

COAL-FIRED power station operator Drax has received €300m (£238.6m) funding from the European Commission for its carbon storage project, the UK government said yesterday.

The news is a boost for the burgeoning carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology, which aims to cut carbon emissions while still burning fossil fuels.

The White Rose project at Drax’s plant in Yorkshire will be one of Europe’s first CCS projects. When built, it will capture around 90 per cent of the plant’s carbon dioxide emissions and store them under the North Sea.

The project would support up to 2,000 jobs and provide clean electricity to more than 630,000 homes, the government said.
