EE crowned best UK mobile network, but rivals closing in

Mobile operator EE was crowned the UK’s best performing mobile network, according to an independent study out today.

The tests by RootMetrics, the leading independent mobile analytics firm, found that EE’s customers received better calling, texting and mobile internet performance than rival operators Three, O2 and Vodafone during the first half of 2014.

“Today’s results, along with last week’s report from Ofcom, show that EE is providing the best mobile experience to businesses and consumers across the UK. We continue to invest in getting even better, and setting new standards for performance and reliability,” an EE spokesperson said.

Despite the overall victory, RootMetrics found the gap between EE and the other mobile operators had narrowed from its previous study during the second half of 2013.

“EE finished in first place outright in five of the six UK-wide categories this time around, a slight change from the second half of 2013, when EE won all six awards outright. Since then, Three has crashed the party, sharing top honors with EE in our reliability rankings in this round of testing. Three once again finished second in our overall performance results, but it has closed the gap considerably,” said RootMetrics.

Vodafone, which ranked in last place in five of the six categories, said: “Regular independent testing of our network shows that our customers are experiencing a significantly improving network every day due to our massive ongoing investment.

“We are spending £1bn on our network and services this year alone to improve mobile coverage and network quality across the UK.”

RootMetrics’ study involved driving over 25,000 miles across the UK, collecting nearly 1m test samples across the country. “Our mobile phones have become an essential part of our everyday lives, but determining which network performs best seems to have become more difficult,” said RootMetrics chief executive Bill Moore.
