Facebook now lets you send money to friends via Messenger app

By: Lynsey Barber

Facebook is making a move into the ever growing mobile payment and money transfer space by letting users send money to friends via its Facebook Messenger app.

Facebook users simply need to register a Visa or Mastercard debit card the first time they use the service, and then create a pin for added security or use Touch ID on an iPhone or iPad.

The service will use  Facebook's own internal payment systems which it already uses for advertising and gaming transactions.

Here's how it works.

Initially, the service will roll out in the US across iOS and Android devices, as well as on desktop.

The new feature is hot on the heels of a similar one rolled out by Google, letting Gmail users send and receive money via email.

Snapchat introduced Snapcash for making payments between users and Twitter has partnered with French bank BPCE for money transfers over the social network, and with Barclays in the UK to make transfers using Twitter names via the bank's Pingit app.
