Former Labour Prime Minister Gordon Brown to step down as an MP
Former Labour Prime Minister and chancellor in Tony Blair’s government Gordon Brown is widely expected to announce that he is standing down as an MP this week.
Brown, who took a leading role in the Scottish referendum, spearheading the Westminster campaign to keep the Union, has been a member of Parliament for 32 years. He is currently the MP for Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath and is expected to step down at the general election in May next year.
Rumours about his resignation had been circulating following Brown’s decision not to run as a potential candidate for leader of the Scottish Labour party last month.
He has kept a relatively low profile in Westminster since Labour lost the general election in 2010, and has focused instead on global charity and fundraising work, largely in education.
