George Galloway has become the latest candidate in a crowded field vying to succeed Boris Johnson as Mayor of London.

Johnson will be stepping down as mayor in next year's election, after he was elected to represent Uxbridge in Parliament.

Galloway tweeted the announcement, urging anyone that can help his campaign to get in touch. The tweet features his son patting the politician on the back, with the caption "you've got this".

I'm standing for Mayor of London 2016. If you can help in any way, write to me at [email protected] pic.twitter.com/UDX0KMZ2VO

— George Galloway MP (@georgegalloway) May 28, 2015

The announcement comes after he lost his parliamentary seat of Bradford West earlier this month in the General Election.

The controversial Respect MP had been elected by a landslide in a 2012 by-election, but Labour won the seat back in 2015 with their candidate Naz Shah. Upon losing, Galloway claimed that he would start legal action.

He had previously spoken of his intentions to stand if he lost the seat. Speaking to Sky News before the election, he said:

I won't run for London Mayor if I am re-elected on 7 May. If I am not re-elected I will run. It's as clear an answer as I can possibly give up.
