Glass heads race to be the new finance director at RBS

ROYAL Bank of Scotland (RBS) is considering the appointment of Simon Glass to replace Guy Whittaker as finance director.

Glass, who joined RBS as deputy finance director three months ago from Standard Chartered, is believed to be heading the race to succeed Whittaker, who will part company with the 70 per cent state-owned bank before October.

The recruitment process is still ongoing, but Glass has a wealth of experience in such roles, having served as chief financial officer of HSBC in the Asia-Pacific region.

He joined Standard Chartered in 2006 but was passed over for the finance director role in favour of Richard Meddings.

If Glass lands the position at RBS, his appointment could be announced with the group’s half-year results,  which are due to be released in early August.

The replacement of Whittaker would complete chief executive Stephen Hester’s efforts to clear the boardroom of executives associated with the regime of his predecessor Sir Fred Goodwin, who has been widely blamed for the risky practices which laid the bank low.
