Going out in a blazer of glory

STRIPED blazers, perhaps topped off with a jaunty straw boater, have long been the uniform for the well-dressed chap at Henley, which takes place at the start of July. But this year, your stripes need not be mothballed afterwards.

Regatta wear, such as deck shoes and blazers, are not only for those contemplating a session on a punt and have never been so on trend as they are this season. The quintessential British look is this summer’s hottest story for those who want to step away from the stolid suit clad crowd.

If you’re up for stripes but worried about looking silly, heed this advice from menswear designer Simon Carter: “Unless you want to look like the Michelin man, avoid horizontal stripes at all costs. However, the classic vertical stripe is inherently flattering. A chunky top- to-toe stripe will imply a tall, lean silhouette ironing out any unsightly bulges, and creating the illusion of adding an extra 20 per cent onto your height.”

You also have plenty of choice when it comes to keeping the look toned down – many are in muted colours such as grey or pale blue. Now all you have to do is find the hat to match.
