Golf Comment: Spieth delights again but Zach is danger man

PERFECT weather yesterday made St Andrews look very beatable but the Old Course started to show its teeth in the afternoon and the forecast suggests today could be very tough.

Dustin Johnson showed that he has forgotten his disappointment at the US Open by playing beautifully, although I was even more impressed with Jordan Spieth.

This is no easy place to come to and win as a first-timer, but in his first round here as a professional Spieth was five under through seven holes. He is incredible and just keeps on amazing me.

The Open has certainly started off as another duel between Johnson and Spieth, but there are an awful lot of very good players lurking near the top of the leaderboard.

England’s Danny Willett did well, Paul Lawrie showed his eagle in the Champions Golfers’ Challenge on Wednesday was no fluke, and Jason Day looks to be due a win.

But the danger man in my eyes is another who carded a six-under-par 66, Zach Johnson. He looks to be playing the best golf of his life.

THE MAGIC OF ST ANDREWS
DAVID CANNON, R&A PHOTOGRAPHER

“I’ve photographed 33 Opens now. All have been glorious but at St Andrews, the Home of Golf, you know there’s always the chance of one amazing, iconic, timeless image.”

WHY I LOVE ST ANDREWS
TONY JACKLIN

“It is more than the sum of its undeniably great individual golf courses. I think about the loop, the bunkers, the double greens, and the old town. Historic holes, like those on the Old Course, stay with me. They stand the test of time.”
