Google’s Eric Schmidt: Amazon is our biggest search rival

By: Billy Ehrenberg

Google's chairman has dismissed Bing and Yahoo: the biggest threat to its search hegemony is Amazon.

Eric Schmidt believes that the scrutiny Google is under in Europe after the 'right to be forgotten' battle is unfair given the large roles played by the company's rivals, such as Facebook and Amazon.

Mobile search is becoming more and more influential as the proportion of total online time spent on mobiles continues to grow.

The most popular app in the world – including in Europe – is Facebook, a company which now describes itself as the on-ramp to the internet,

he said.

Yahoo, he continued, is often seen as Google's main competitor but that label is misplaced.

Many people think our main competition is Bing or Yahoo. But, really, our biggest search competitor is Amazon.

Google's share of the European search market is colossal, sitting at around 90 per cent. The company is facing regulatory pressures as a four-year european Commission investigation grinds towards a conclusion.

Brussels recently rejected a third attempt by Google to settle the case.
