Hammersmith Bridge was closed in March

London mayor Sadiq Khan has said it will take until August for the costs of repairing the closed Hammersmith Bridge to be revealed.

London Assembly member Tony Devenish, who represents West Central, asked the mayor whether the four-month time period could be brought forward.

Khan replied: “I can give you the commitment that TfL and the council are going as fast as they can. I’ll reflect back to them your comments… the key thing is for them to do the work in relation to what proposals there are going forward, and a cost as well.”

Later, Devenish tweeted:

The @mayoroflondon agreed we need a "sense of urgency" in agreeing HOW Hammersmith Bridge is repaired QUICKLY. Taking 4 months (until August) to decide how to do this is NOT acceptable. H&F Council are appalling. @teamgreenhalgh is the real solution.

Hammersmith and Fulham council closed the 132-year-old bridge back in April when it found “critical faults” it said would risk the safety of users.

The council is currently working with TfL on what kinds of repairs are needed to restore the bridge, which the council said was “never designed to take modern traffic”.

The council has been heavily criticised for its handling of the bridge closure.

Zac Goldsmith, the MP for Richmond, which offered to take over the bridge, said the council’s failure to answer questions from MPs and council leaders had left them “in the dark”, while former minister and MP for Chelsea and Fulham, Greg Hands, said the council and the mayor needed to “get a grip”.
