Holders Chelsea crash out

Charlton knocked holders Chelsea out of the Carling Cup but only after a penalty shoot-out at Stamford Bridge.

It was the Blues’ first taste of defeat this season, coming on the back of their first dropped points in the Premiership at Everton’s Goodison Park last weekend.

Defender Robert Huth was the only player to miss during the shoot-out. His spot-kick was well saved by Charlton reserve keeper Stephan Andersen.

It was left to Bryan Hughes to score the winning penalty and put Alan Curbishley’s side into the fourth round.

John Terry put the home side in front late in the first half, getting on the end of an Arjen Robben cross five minutes before the break.

However, Darren Bent levelled for the Addicks ahead of the half-time whistle, volleying in left-footed from 20 yards out. Frank Lampard came on as a second-half substitute but even the in-form England midfielder could not conjure up a winner.

West Ham’s participation in the competition ended after a 1-0 defeat away at Bolton Wanderers.

The Mexican striker Jared Borgetti was the scorer at the Reebok Stadium.

Paul Konchesky had a goal disallowed in the first half, the closest that the Hammers came to scoring.
