Hong Kong Horse Racing Tips: Apprentice Victor Wong can soar to victory on fast-starting Eagle

CLAIMING apprentices continue to be worth their weight in gold in Hong Kong.

The likes of Dylan Mo, Matthew Poon and Jack Wong have already ridden nine winners between them in opening weeks, but it’s the newest recruit, Victor Wong, who has made the biggest impact this season.

The 24-year-old has already won five times from just 38 rides and, with his valuable 10lb claim, it’s no wonder trainers are clamouring for his services.

Happy Valley’s sharp circuit is an ideal track for apprentices, who provided they have a good clock in their head, can bounce out off in front, and then use their valuable claims to their advantage.

Wong did that earlier last month when making all on fast-starting EAGLE who seeks to successfully follow-up in the six-furlong Class3 handicap at 3.50pm.

A 6lb penalty obviously makes life tougher, and Jumbo Happiness, who was third in that race, will be backed to reverse the form.

However, Eagle won more easily than the official margin suggests and is still progressing after only half-a-dozen runs. He could still be in front of the handicapper and is worth following.

Wong is also aboard an interesting contender in CAPTAIN BOSS who lines up in a competitive handicap over the extended mile at 1.15pm.

This son of Dream Ahead has been crying out for a step up in distance after a couple of eye-catching runs over six furlongs already this season.

Draw three is the ideal number for him to slide along the rails in a midfield position and then put his weight advantage to good use when dashing down the final furlong.
