Man United to continue solid start to season

BEN CLEMINSON PREVIEWS THE BEST OF THE PREMIER LEAGUE ACTION

LOUIS van Gaal can certainly be more satisfied with his team’s start this year than 12 months ago.

Manchester United have opened their league campaign with two solid, if unspectacular, one-nil wins against Tottenham and Aston Villa.

They also have a two-goal advantage against Club Brugge going into the second leg of the Champions League qualifier.

After three games last season the Red Devils had picked up just one point from a possible six in the league and suffered an embarrassing 4-0 defeat at MK Dons in the League Cup.

The Dutchman will be pleased, but he knows there’s still plenty to be done, especially with Wayne Rooney struggling for early season form.

A home clash against Newcastle in tomorrow’s lunchtime kick-off shouldn’t cause too many problems, however.

The Magpies drew their first home game against Southampton and were then easily beaten at Swansea last weekend.

Steve McClaren will be looking for an improved performance on his return to Old Trafford, yet his squad aren’t anywhere near as powerful as their hosts.

A feature of Man United’s games so far this term is that they have managed to get on the scoresheet relatively early.

In all three matches they have been leading at half-time and full-time and a repeat of that scenario looks the best fixed-odds bet at even money.

The pressure is on Rooney a little after his sorry display at Villa Park, but he’s bounced back plenty of times before and Memphis Depay looks like he’s going to be an excellent signing for the club.

I have a feeling there could be goals in this one. Newcastle have conceded four in their first two matches, but Sporting Index are only offering total goals at 2.8-3.

A better option is to buy United’s supremacy at 1.6 as they will go into this one full of confidence.
