Marston’s just took another gulp of Thwaites

British pub brewer and operator Marston's has said it will take another gulp of north-west based brewer Thwaites.

In an update to the London Stock Exchange today, Marston's, which has been brewing Thwaites' beers since early last year, announced it had bought its beer division outright for £25.1m.

As part of the acquisition, Marston's has entered into a long-term exclusive agreement to supply all beer, wine, spirits and minerals to Thwaites' pub estate.

Ralph Findlay, Marstons' chief executive, said: "I am delighted to welcome our new colleagues to Marston's. We are acquiring a very high quality business with good people and brands, and with growth potential."

The group hopes snapping up the beer division will enable it to focus on expanding its pubs, inns and hotels.

"The acquisition is consistent with our beer business strategy to focus on local provenance and premium brands, and provides opportunity to capitalise on the developing free trade market and increasing consumer interest in the beer category."
