In a statement, Merlin Entertainments chief executive Nick Varney said the management was “committed to ensuring that the public can again visit us with confidence”.

We closed the Park immediately whilst preliminary investigations took place and to give our staff time to come to terms with the accident and its aftermath. In recent days our management team have been engaged in a thorough review of our operating and safety procedures before making this decision.

The Smiler ride itself has been closed off and will not be re-opened tomorrow. It is being investigated by the Governments Health and Safety Executive.

Merlin Entertainments shares have been performing badly this week – they fell by 3.5 per cent the day after the crash, making the company one of the biggest fallers on the FTSE.
