Murray returns with a bang as Watson shines

BRITAIN’S Andy Murray believes he has rediscovered a winning formula after making an emphatic return in his first competitive match since losing his Wimbledon crown in June.

Murray brushed aside Australian Nick Kyrgios, who stunned world No2 Rafael Nadal at the All England Club just weeks ago, 6-2, 6-2 at the Rogers Cup in Toronto yesterday.

The Scot insists his work with new coach Amelie Mauresmo is beginning to pay off and restore him to top form ahead of this month’s US Open.

“I played with a lot of variety, which has always been my game,” he said. “We work on all aspects of the game and I’ve worked extremely hard physically.”

Eighth-seed Murray will face Frenchman Richard Gasquet in round three today.

Giant-killing Heather Watson caused an upset by beating 10th seed Dominika Cibulkova 6-2, 6-7, 7-6 in the second round of the women’s tournament yesterday.

This victory could see Watson return to the WTA’s top 50, with the 22-year-old drawn against eighth-seed Victoria Azarenka in today’s third round.
