#MuslimApologies – what is it and why is it taking Twitter by storm?

Twitter was flooded by tweets ending with the hashtag #MuslimApologies this morning. Across the nation, Muslims were apologising for all sorts of things – both to do with their religion and, well, not related at all.
 
Why are they doing it? We asked one participant, Akhal, to explain what was happening. He said: "It started off as a joke, but the reality is Muslims are having to apologise for things they have no connection with."
 
Another, "Raz", added: "It's meant to be a tongue in cheek hashtag about how Muslims end up having to apologise for matters that they have no role in."
