North Greenwich Tube station has reopened hours after a suspicious item was found on board an eastbound Jubilee Line train.

Nearby Canary Wharf station has been very busy as a result of the closure – Tower Hamlets police were advising passengers to opt for other nearby stations if possible.

"As a precaution a controlled detonation has since taken place in order to ensure the item was safe," British Transport Police (BTP) said in a statement about the suspicious item.

"An investigation is now underway led by the Metropolitan Police supported by BTP.

Following discussions with the police, a spokesman for O2 said the venue nearby the station would remain open tonight and the Nickelback's performance will go ahead as planned.

London -the show will go on. We will be posting information shortly on the approved methods of transportation to get to @The02venues tonite.

London – please plan accordingly as you make your travel arrangements to get down here. It might take a bit longer. More info coming soon.

The O2 said in a statement:

"If you had intended to arrive by tube there are other options including MBNA Thames Clippers that stops at North Greenwich pier and also the DLR to Royal Victoria and the Emirates Airline across to North Greenwich. Our car parks remain open and there are drop off points for those arriving by taxi. Please also check Transport for London for routes and latest travel updates."

The Met Police said: "While we are keeping an open mind, the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command is leading the investigation because it has the expertise to deal with incidents of this kind. British Transport Police is supporting them in their investigation."

The BTP urged anyone who saw anything suspicious on the  train, or anywhere else, to call the Anti-Terrorist Hotline on 0800 789321.

Specialist officers from the Metropolitan Police and BTP were called to investigate a suspicious item at the station this morning.

"Just after 11.00am today we were called to North Greenwich station after train staff reported finding a suspicious item," BTP said in a statement.
