The Open 2016: Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer set to fly the flag for Europe at Royal Troon
European golf has been in rude health for a while, and there are a few players from this side of the Atlantic who’ll fancy their chances of taking home the Claret Jug on Sunday evening.
Rory McIlroy waltzed to a wire-to-wire victory in 2014 at Hoylake, and represents the continent’s best chance of victory this week.
Having missed last year’s Open after a freak accident on the eve of the tournament, McIlroy will be fired up to reclaim the trophy – especially as he’s now slipped behind Jason Day, Dustin Johnson and Jordan Spieth at the head of the World Golf Rankings.

Being a Ryder Cup year, there’s more than just prize money at stake for Europe’s golfers, and with fierce competition for a spot on Darren Clarke’s team at Hazeltine, a strong Open could make the difference for a few golfers.
Lee Westwood currently sits just outside the automatic positions in 11th on the World Points list – even if a wildcard from his good friend Clarke may prove a formality.
Although the former world No 1 had a poor 2015, he has rallied this year, coming tied for 2nd at the Masters, and remaining in contention well into Sunday afternoon of the US Open.
He always raises his game at the Majors, and selling his finishing position at 40 with Sporting Index looks a shrewd move.
Another man who could be in for a good week is Martin Kaymer.
The two-time Major winner has been striking the ball well recently, and has three top 10 finishes in his last five outings.
