NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE, ENGLAND - OCTOBER 05: Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn delivers a speech to party members and supporters as he attends a campaign rally at Newcastle City Hall on October 05, 2019 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. The Prime Minister is backing a request by Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn to hold a series of meetings with senior civil servants, as the two parties edge towards calling a snap election.

According to Politico, the leader of the opposition has requested these meetings, in the event that he forms a government in the coming weeks.

City A.M understands that Labour has been seeking these meetings for some time, but none have been scheduled.

However a senior government source confirmed that the Prime Minister is now happy to wave these through.

The Conservatives have been goading the leader of the opposition over his refusal to back the PM and go to the polls, after the government twice failed to get the required Commons support.

Senior figures including Tory party co-chair James Cleverly have deployed the Prime Minister’s description of Corbyn as a “chlorinated chicken”.

Last night Boris Johnson used his Twitter account to tell Corbyn “name the date”.

Great to hear you’re no longer running scared. The voters have a choice: getting Brexit done with me, or the pointless delay you’re offering. Name the date. https://t.co/jY88u0Zrb6

A Labour spokesman told CityAM: “Jeremy Corbyn and the shadow Cabinet are looking forward to using these access talks to prepare for a transformational Labour government that will bring key utilities into public ownership, boost people’s pay and tackle the climate emergency.”
