Race to Dubai prize money 2016: Henrik Stenson in pole position for $1.25m earnings boost but Danny Willett and Rory McIlroy still in contention at the DP World Tour Championship

Henrik Stenson is in pole position to win the lucrative Race to Dubai bonus ahead of the European Tour's climax at this week's DP World Tour Championship.

The Swede is currently top of the European Tour rankings but can still be toppled by Danny Willett, fellow Swede Alex Noren and Rory McIlroy – ranked second, third and fourth respectively – from the No1 spot, replete with the Race to Dubai title and $1.25m (£1m) bonus that comes with it.

A further $1.33m (£1.1m) in prize money is up for grabs for the winner of the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai this weekend.

World No4 Stenson, who has earned £6m this year in combined European and PGA Tour prize money earnings, can boost his take for the year past £8m by securing both titles.

That would represent his second-best haul in a single season, after 2013 when he first topped the end of season European Tour rankings.

The Race to Dubai prize has been shared exclusively between Stenson and McIlroy in the last four years, although the Northern Irishman is a long shot to take home the $1.25m reward for a second successive year.

McIlroy, whose chances for the prize were dented by his decision to withdraw from the Turkish Airlines Open last month because of security concerns, must win in Dubai and hope Stenson finishes outside the top 45 and Willett to finish outside the top five.

An outright victory at the DP World Tour Championship would be enough for Willett to win, while a runner-up finish would also be enough should both Stenson and Noren finish below him.
