Chris Froome could win Team GB their first cycling medal of the games on Wednesday in the men's road time trial at 2pm.

The Tour de France champion is targeting gold after missing out on a medal in a disappointing 12th placed finish in the road race on Saturday.

Froome, who took bronze in the time trial four years ago, is well suited to Rio's hilly 55km course but will have no room for error in a strong field that includes compatriot Geraint Thomas — a late entrant follwoing a spate of injury withdrawals — Germany's Tony Martin and the Netherlands' Tom Dumoulin.

In the earlier women's time trial at 12.30pm, Emma Pooley, who won silver in this event eight years ago, is aiming to become comeback queen after coming out of retirement to race in Rio.

British hopes in the 69kg category weightlifting will be carried by 17-year-old Rebekah Tiler who gets to grips with the bar at 4:30pm.

Tiler, a European bronze medallist, is not one of the top favourites but has the potential to threaten the podium places.

Simultaneously, Team GB's men's rugby sevens team continue their campaign with as tough a test as you could ask for in the sport against New Zealand.

At 8pm, Jack Laugher and Chris Mears will aim to replicate the heroics of Tom Daley and Daniel Goodfellow in the 3m synchro diving.

Japan's Kohei Uchimura, widely thought of as the best male gymnast in the world, is aiming to retain his all-around title in the men's final from 8pm. Britain's Max Whitlock, a world silver medallist, is a serious contender to his throne.

For those of a nocturnal disposition, Andrew Willis is expected to be involved in the Men's 200m breastroke final at 2.03am.

Meanwhile host nation Brazil face the prospect of elimination in the opening round of football unless they can defeat Denmark in their final group game which kicks-off at 2am.
