Rooney sees Falcao deal as huge statement

MANCHESTER United skipper Wayne Rooney prefers to focus on the impact deadline day capture Radamel Falcao might have in returning the club to former glories rather than contemplate how it affects his own status.

The Red Devils shelled out £20m to secure the services of the Colombia marksman on a year-long loan from Monaco as Louis van Gaal bids to overcome an indifferent start to his Old Trafford tenure.

With Holland forward Robin van Persie approaching full fitness after his World Cup exploits, it remains to be seen how Van Gaal juggles his frontline resources although Rooney remains unconcerned with the striking conundrum.

“I don’t know how Falcao’s arrival could affect my role,” he said. “I think it is a fantastic signing and is a real showing of intent.”

Ajax utility man Danny Blind also joined the Old Trafford ranks on deadline day, with the club’s transfer spend reaching record levels.

Falcao has scored 104 goals in 139 games since his 2009 move to Europe and Porto but insists representing United will be a career pinnacle.

“I always wanted to be here in the Premier League,” said Falcao.

“Manchester United is the best team in England and everything is perfect for me.”
