The recently-privatised Royal Mail has announced a series of changes to its senior management team.

As Royal Mail begins its time in the private sector, Mark Higson, managing director, operations and modernisation, following the company's AGM, decided to resign from the board in July 2014.

The company said he had "played a key role in planning and executing one of the UK's largest industrial transformation programmes."

Mark Higson said:

I am proud of the achievements of the people in Royal Mail in delivering such a large and complex transformation over the past six years.

Sue Whalley will assume the role of chief operation officer and will continue her role on the chief executive's committee. Ms Whalley is currently director of regulation, pricing and government affairs.

Moya Greene, chief executive, said:

Sue Whalley is a very experienced executive with a great deal of knowledge of Royal Mail's main operations. Her analytical abilities, along with her strong track record of delivering major projects, will be of great benefit to us as we move on to the next phase of our transformation programme.

Operations director for the West, Stuart Simpson, will assume the role of deputy chief operation officer. Prior to his career at Royal Mail he held senior positions as General Motors.
