GOOGLE last night unveiled a version of its Android smartphone software designed specifically for smartwatches and wearables.

Motorola, LG and Samsung are among the consumer hardware manufacturers that have signed up to use the new software which Google is calling Android Wear.

LG’s G smartwatch running Android Wear is due to arrive next quarter with Motorola’s 360 smartwatch launching in the summer. Other manufacturers listed including HTC, Samsung, and Asus have not yet revealed Android Wear products.

“We’re so excited about wearables – they understand the context of the world around you, and you can interact with them simply and efficiently, with just a glance or a spoken word,” said Google’s senior vice president of Android Sundar Pichai.

Google said it plans to announce more details and new partners for Android Wear in coming months.
