Smaller energy players forcing drop in prices

ENERGY secretary Ed Davey advised households that they could save £200 on average by choosing a new energy tariff due to increased competition in the market.

“I want people to get a better deal on their energy bills. Some of the new smaller suppliers are cutting prices and forcing bigger players to respond. Over two million people switched energy supplier between last October and March this year as competition hots up,” Davey said.

The minister said consumers should use the “extra hour” created by the clocks going back yesterday to make the change.

Davey also promised there would be “no blackouts” this winter, in an interview with the Sunday Telegraph yesterday.

The Liberal Democrat MP was addressing fears over power supply shortages in the wake of recent nuclear plant shutdowns and a closure at Didcot power plant following a fire.
