Smashin’ fashion

FROM the dashing chaps in clean-cut whites back in the Twenties to the short skirts (plus frilly knickers) of the ladies’ game in the Seventies, tennis – and Wimbledon in particular – has always been a source of sporting fashion statements. It went through a bit of a lull when the most noteworthy look was Andre Agassi’s hairy chest, but it was Roger Federer who signalled the return of fashion consciousness to the game.

He may not be Mr Charisma, but Federer’s eye-catching white blazers and trousers have become a style staple every summer. This year Federer’s look had developed from the preppy cardigan of 2008, strolling onto Centre Court in a military-style tennis blazer, while Andy Murray has looked the bees knees modelling an old-style shirt from the home of traditional tennis chic, Fred Perry. Now, even couture design star Stella McCartney has entered the fray with a line for Adidas. When it comes to sporting style, tennis is still ahead of the game.
