Snapchat filter brings Big Ben back to life for Christmas

Snapchat today unveiled a new filter that will bring Big Ben back to life for Westminster visitors over the Christmas period.

The iconic clock tower is currently undergoing repair work and the Great Bell, known as Big Ben, has been silent since August last year.

But the photo app will now strip away the scaffolding, allowing visitors to view the landmark in its full glory.

Snapchat said its new filter uses location-based and 3D augmented reality technology to create a virtual tower that gives the clock’s accurate time and recreates Big Ben’s famous bongs.

“Our goal was to bring together the most cutting-edge mapping and imaging technologies to create the kind of unique, location-specific experience that only Snapchat – and perhaps Father Christmas – can deliver.”

The filter will be active for several months and adapted over time, the company said.

Construction work on Big Ben is expected to continue until 2021, with the clock only breaking its silence to chime in the New Year and mark the Armistice Day centenary in November this year.

The BBC has said it plans to replace the clock’s iconic bongs with the bells of Rochdale Town Hall before the evening news on Christmas Eve.
