The City View: ‘The balance between medical risk and economic harm is not right’ — Mark Tanzer, CEO of ABTA

By: Harry Banks

In this episode Christian talks to Mark Tanzer, CEO of ABTA, the travel association, which represents the UK’s travel and tour operators. Mark gives a candid assessment of the challenges facing the sector and also of the government’s response to the crisis. He argues that the quarantine measures were badly conceived, badly implemented and badly communicated, and that the sector faces a wave of failures and job losses without immediate action to ease international travel this summer. Despite these concerns, he is optimistic for the long-term future of the industry, but says support is needed now in order to make the best of what remains of the summer.

Also in this episode, Christian looks at a new agreement to boost the UK’s space industry; Nationwide’s decision to hike the minimum deposit for a first time buyer; and gloomy data from employers bracing for the end of the government’s job retention scheme.
