These are the 10 projects vying for the title of London’s greatest infrastructure achievement

The 10 projects in the running to be named London's greatest infrastructure achievement for this year have been revealed.

The Institution of Civil Engineers has released the shortlist of 10 projects being considered for the top accolades, with awards being given out next month for the best infrastructure project, innovation, and community benefit. All projects will be up for the greatest contribution to London award too.

Among the nominees is the £14.8bn Crossrail, delivering Europe's largest infrastructure project with the new Elizabeth Line railway. The big launch is set for December this year, with construction nearing completion.

The new Exhibition Road Quarter at the V&A museum also makes the cut, which provides a new entrance, courtyard and gallery for temporary exhibitions.

The projects competing for best infrastructure project in London
1. Crossrail – delivering the Elizabeth line; Europe’s largest infrastructure project
2. Thames Estuary Asset Management 2100 – upgrading and monitoring London’s tidal defences for the future
3. Victoria & Albert Museum, Exhibition Road Quarter – a new public cultural space for the museum
4. Kirtling Street Temporary Marine Structures – enabling work to aid the use of river transport for the Thames Tideway project
5. Enjoy Waltham Forest – place-making in Walthamstow and promoting healthier lifestyles
6. Nine Elms South Bank Cable Tunnel – upgrading critical power infrastructure in the Battersea area
7. Green Dragon Lane, London Borough of Enfield – London’s first road to include recycled plastic
8. Chelsea to Battersea Tunnel by Cadent Gas – future-proofing London’s gas infrastructure
9. Nereda Technology – technology in waste water treatment for Thames Water
10. Southwark to Canada Cable Tunnel – new infrastructure to ensure reliable electricity supply

“Our awards, in association with SNC-Lavalin and Atkins, showcase how new infrastructure can improve the lives of millions of the capital's residents and demonstrates the fantastic and exciting schemes that London-based engineering companies are delivering every day," said Jonathan Baggs, director of ICE London.

Last year, the redevelopment of London Bridge station took the crown as the greatest infrastructure project in London for 2017.

The project was deemed to be the one that most beneficially impacts Londoners, boosting capacity at the station by 65 per cent with 15 new extra-long platforms, capable of serving up to 18 trains each hour.
