Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has backed Harry Kane’s signing of a bumper new contract to prove the boost his side need to arrest a slump of just one victory in 10 matches.

Kane has penned a six-and-half-year deal until 2022, extending his current stay at White Hart Lane by two years, which is set to see the prolific frontman earn around £80,000 a week, excluding bonuses.

“The news is very good for the dressing room and all the fans and the club, and for him,” said Pochettino, whose side host relegation-threatened Swansea tomorrow.

“It’s great news. We all feel very happy because one more time he is showing commitment to the club and project and that’s great for us.

“When they are involved in negotiations like these it always can effect, not him in his performance, but now the deal is done it’s important to focus on the future in training, to improve and try to score goals as he needs to do.”

Kane, who has netted six times this term having been sidelined for seven weeks with ankle ligament damage, added: “Everyone knows how much I love this team and how I feel about the club and to sign another contract is a special feeling.”
