Troubled Indians summon Shastri

TROUBLESHOOTER Ravi Shastri has been drafted in to oversee India’s one-day series with England, which starts at Bristol on Monday, as the tourists bid to halt a dismal run of form.

Indian cricket chiefs have said the former national team captain, who played 80 Tests and 150 one-day internationals between 1981 and 1992, will be in overall charge of cricket with Duncan Fletcher continuing in his role as head coach.

Ex-players Sanjay Bangar and Bharat Arun are also joining the support staff while bowling coach Joe Dawes and fielding guru Trevor Penny have been given leave to take a break during the five-match series.

The appointment of Shastri follows a disastrous sequence of results as India suffered three heavy defeats on the spin, culminating in England claiming a 3-1 Test series win at the Oval on Sunday.
