Turning it on: 2 per cent of men shop online while having sex

Despite weakening retail sales, we are well established as a nation of shopaholics – but a new survey suggests we are taking our addiction to new extremes, with 2 per cent of men apparently shopping online during sex.

Women are also at it – although not quite as regularly – with one in 100 admitting to making a purchase while making love.

Shopping on the loo has also emerged as a popular past-time for one in 10 of us, and around the same proportion do it while out for dinner or drinks. Nearly half of Brits – 48 per cent – do it while in bed, with Mancunians the worst culprits (59 per cent).

The survey of 2,000 people, commissioned by charitable price comparison site Give as you Live, found 2 per cent of men shopped while on a date, though less than 1 per cent of women did the same.

Not surprisingly, Give as you Live puts the rise in Brits shopping at times or in situations that would previously have been off-limits is down to an increase in smartphones and other digital devices, which allow people to shop around the clock.

Steff Lewis, head of consumer insights at Give as you Live, said: “Internet shopping has become a staple for many of us – but there’s a time and a place. Shopping on the loo or in bed is fine, but on a date or during sex – really?”
